 FAQs

+ What is Eunoia Medical Clinic?

Eunoia Medical is a unique 100% virtual medical clinic that specializes in the treatment of common mental health disorders in women and mothers.

Eunoia relies heavily on technology for its operation and effective care of patients. Below are expectations for clinic patients to ensure they are best served by Dr. Carly Crewe at Eunoia Medical.

+ How is Eunoia Medical Clinic different from my family doctor?

Your care through Eunoia Medical Clinic does NOT replace your regular family physician care. In fact, we seek to work collaboratively with your family doctor and supplement their care. General physical medical issues, management of chronic illnesses and intercurrent acute illnesses (ie. cough + cold, abdominal pain, etc) are not dealt with through Eunoia Medical Clinic.

+ Who can be seen at Eunoia Medical?

Eunoia Medical Clinic sees female patients with mental health issues on both self-referral and physician referral basis (physician referrals currently on hold due to growing demand as of June 13, 2021.)

While our physicians do work with mental health disorders and symptoms in women, there are certain psychiatric conditions which are not appropriate for Eunoia Medical Clinic. Please see “Medical Conditions” below.

+ What sort of mental health issues do you help with?

The following issues, symptoms and concerns are some of the most common patient concerns at Eunoia Medical Clinic (list not exhaustive):

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Peripartum Mood Disorder (Excluding Postpartum Psychosis)
  • Depression (Not acutely suicidal)
  • Insomnia (Whether on or off sedatives)
  • Medication teaching, selection, troubleshooting and initiation
  • Medication selection/management in pregnant and breastfeeding women
  • Medication tapering, adjuncts or supported tapering
  • Support for healthy relationships, boundary setting and assertive communication
  • Supported sedative tapering (ie. sleeping pill tapering)

The following conditions are considered NOT appropriate patient concerns for Eunoia Medical (list not exhaustive):

  • Chronic pain on opioids (if only or main concern)
  • Acutely suicidal (if you are feeling suicidal - please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department immediately.)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder or complex PTSD
  • Uncontrolled or untreated Bipolar Disorder
  • Schizophrenia
  • Significant personality disorders (as primary mental health concern)

Physicians in Eunoia Medical are family doctors and are not replacements for formal psychiatric care. We value our psychiatry colleagues and often consult them for assistance with more complex patients. Being seen at Eunoia Medical Clinic is not a replacement for specialist psychiatric consultation.

Eunoia Medical reserves the right to refuse a referral if it is deemed inappropriate or out of the scope of care for virtual telemedicine mental health care.

If during the course of a consultation a patient’s needs are deemed by the provider to be outside of her scope of practice, the practitioner will provide appropriate resources and referrals as required and available.

+ How can I refer myself, or become a patient of Eunoia Medical Clinic?

Patients interested in becoming a patient Eunoia Medical Clinic should book a Meet + Greet Appointment with our mental health nurse via our website.

Following the Meet + Greet, if both the patient and our nurse would deem Eunoia to be the most appropriate care provider for the patient, the patient will be provided with an email detailing all of the next steps.

Depending on the current patient caseload, patients may be seen quickly or placed on a waiting list for the next available open consultation appointment. Patients will be notified of an estimated waiting time if this is the case.

+ How do I book an appointment?

All appointments are booked via the AVA Connect Patient Portal. Please do not attempt to book an appointment over the phone or over email.

+ What technology is required to be seen at Eunoia Medical Clinic?

An email and commitment to use the online scheduler and patient portal is required for patients of Eunoia Medical. A cell phone number capable of receiving text messages is also preferred as video conference invites are sent via text message.

+ What if I have an administrative or scheduling concern?

The quickest and most effective way to get in touch with Eunoia Medical is via email or through the secure AVA Connect Patient Portal (if already an existing patient). Phone calls will be returned within 2 business days.

NOTE: Medical issues will not be discussed outside of a medical consultation. By agreeing to email Eunoia Medical, patients acknowledge that email is not a secure communication means and not an appropriate forum to discuss mental health concerns. All medical and mental health concerns will be discussed only within secure telemedicine consultations.

+ Do you order lab tests?

Occasionally, providers may order lab work or other investigations as part of their assessment.

If results are abnormal, patients will be contacted via secure messaging or phone depending on urgency. If these investigations are normal, the patient will not be notified.

+ I need a prescription refill. Can you help me?

Medications prescribed by Eunoia Physicians: Eunoia Medical doctors will regularly refill medications that they prescribe to manage your mental health condition during secure telemedicine appointments.

Prescriptions will be faxed to the pharmacy of your choice (in Alberta, or otherwise depending on your location). If you are between appointments and have run out of your medication, please note that prescription refills done outside of a clinic appointment are uninsured services and are subject to a private charge.

The charge for a prescription refill request outside of an office visit (via secure message, email or phone call) is $50.00. Prescriptions will be faxed to the pharmacy of your choice in Alberta.

Please plan accordingly and be aware of when your medications run out as prescription refill requests will not be fulfilled immediately. A prescription refill request can be submitted via the AVA Connect Patient Portal and it will be fulfilled within 72 hours of submission and only after invoice payment has been received. You may also speak to your pharmacist to see if they will provide an emergency extension until you can attend an appointment with your provider or another medical professional.

Medications prescribed by another physician: Eunoia Medical is not intended as a replacement for regular appointments with your family doctor. Medications for physical ailments or chronic conditions as previously prescribed by another physician will not be refilled during your appointment with your Eunoia provider.

+ What are the hours of Eunoia Medical Clinic?

Eunoia Medical Clinic maintains a varied schedule depending on physician availability. Patients will be notified of schedule updates in advance and be able to plan ahead for when their appointments can be made.

If at any time Eunoia Medical is closed and a medical or mental health emergency arises, patients are strongly encouraged to review information on After Hours Care (see below). If in crisis, patients are directed to call 911 immediately or attend their local emergency department.

+ What if I need to cancel my appointment?

Patients can cancel their scheduled appointments with adequate notice via the patient portal. Appointments cancelled less than 24 hours in advance are subject to a fee of $60 for a short appointment and $120 for an appointment of 30 minutes or more.

+ What happens if I miss my appointment or am late to my appointment?

Eunoia Medical uses digital appointment reminders via email to remind patients of their appointments. Missed appointments contribute to loss of available appointment time for another patient.

If a patient is more than 10 minutes late for their appointment, the appointment will be cancelled and a fee of $60.00 applies for an appointment of 15 minutes and $120 applies for a missed initial consult of 30-45 minutes. Please let us know via email if you are running behind.

+ What if I have another medical concern I need to be seen for?

Eunoia Medical is a unique medical clinic specializing only in mental health concerns in women. Therefore, general medical complaints and symptoms are not addressed, diagnosed or managed through telemedicine consultations or otherwise.

+ Do you prescribe opioids, sedatives or cannabis?

Narcotic pain medications, marijuana or sedatives are not prescribed through Eunoia Medical Clinic.

+ What is the online Patient Portal?

Eunoia Medical utilizes AVA Connect, a secure online patient portal for appointment booking as well as secure messaging between providers and patients.

+ Will you write me a note to be off work?

At times, a temporary leave from work can be helpful in the treatment of a mental health disorder. That being said, work and purpose are integral to a healthy life and therefore, all requests for medical leave are treated with discretion.

A note provided to your employer for time off work is an uninsured service and as such, will be subject to a fee of $50.00. Payment is required at the time the note is provided.

+ What is the cost for specialized mental health care at Eunoia Medical Clinic?

Eunoia Medical consultations are covered for patients with valid Alberta Health Care.

If you do not have valid Alberta Health Care, Eunoia Medical services are privately funded (ie. patient pay).

All private pay invoices are due prior to scheduled appointments. If invoices are not paid within 24 hours of appointment time, the appointment will be cancelled and the patient will be notified via email +/- text message. Patients are free to re-book appointments at this time via the AVA Connect Patient Portal.

Rates for Uninsured Patients are listed on our Uninsured Services Schedule

+ What if I am in crisis or have a mental health emergency? (After hours care)
